Unlock your players' fantasies

With interactive storytelling, you can give your fans a customizable experience that reflects who they love, who they are, and what they truly want. You give your players control by designing for player agency. Use the techniques below to design for great agency.

Definition slide reading "Player Agency: the ability of the player to express themselves and their tastes through controlling their actions in the gameplay."
Checklist for designing agency: aim for choices roughly every 20 taps, let the player choose how they react, use active choices that explore fantasies, and don't make the main character a passenger.

Great choices let the player influence the direction of the fantasy

These can be choices that change important and permanent factors of the game (like gender and pronouns), or choices that let the player express their own principles, loyalty, interests, and tastes.

Don't feel like you need to write an enormous number of choices with huge branches. You can still express agency with dialogue choices, for example, letting players choose whether they flirt in a sincere or snarky way. The best choices have at least two interesting options, rather than "Do this" or "Don't do this."

Need inspiration? Here are some ideas for types of agency choices.

Identity and sexual orientation

When possible, offer customization options like:

  • Gender choice for the main character
  • Genitals options during spicy scenes
  • Pronoun choices

Check out the Choice Memory module for how to set these up.

Key decisions

These are choices that have later consequences, such as:

  • Choosing to tell or keep a secret
  • Choosing an action that has both good and evil outcomes, with implications for the world
  • Choosing to acquire an item

Roleplay fantasy

Players love choices that let them roleplay powerful fantasies. This often means letting the player character make bolder, more exciting choices than they might in real life. Try things like:

  • Going undercover or putting on a disguise to infiltrate a location
  • Putting on a steamy distraction to solve a problem
  • Getting to stand up to a bully or enemy
